Track of the Day: Big Ole Freak – Megan Thee Stallion

I’ve been noticing this track, Big Ole Freak by Megan Thee Stallion, consistently dominating the “Hot Samples” section on WhoSampled’s front page since earlier on in the year.

For about three or four months now I’ve ignored clicking and listening to the track or sample but late last night after seeing brand new tracks from DJ Khaled and Tyler the Creator pop up, curiosity got the better of me and I visited the sample page for the first time.

The track, which is featured on Megan’s 2018 EP Tina Snow, features a sample from a 1992 Immature song, Is It Love This Time?.

After clicking play to listen to the sample, I was pleasantly surprised by the song which sounded something like a mid 90’s heater, filled with raunchy sex rhymes.

Big Ole Freak immediately reminded me of Adina Howard’s Freak Like Me and I did enjoy Megan’s flow and style on this song.

Other thoughts that came to mind were other artists she reminded me off – Trina for one on this song and Gangsta Boo on other songs I listened to after.

I checked out other songs by Megan Thee Stallion, in particular, songs from her just released studio album, Fever.

She’s from Houston so don’t expect Young M.A lyricism but her style is still very enjoyable. Big Ole Freak is fun and sexy to me and I don’t think I’ve heard anything else from her that outdoes this.

I saw your profile on WhoSampled and I just wanted to ask you if you know the sample on the start of this song :
Knowledge the Pirate Ft. Roc Marciano – Shots Fired

(Sorry to ask here but “Contact” seems broken

Sorry Bastian, I tried finding that sample too but no luck. If I do find it though, I’ll let you know.
