I was never all that into UK rap.
I mean, I think the first time I heard anything from this genre was “Fix Up, Look Sharp” by Dizzee Rascal back in the early 2000s. And I liked it.
But maybe it’s the accent or something, I don’t know. I just never got into it.
Looking back on the Best of 2019 roundup, without even knowing what I was getting into I found Dave’s Psychodrama and even though not on the list but should have been, I found Little Simz’s Grey Area which was the best critically reviewed album according to Metacritic.
Grey Area was a great listen and I thoroughly enjoyed listening to the entire album and it might just be the best album to come out last year. I don’t know, I didn’t listen to a lot of stuff.
Dave’s Psychodrama topped a lot of lists too and was Pop Matter’s best hip hop album of 2019.
At first I thought it might have been an American rapper I hadn’t heard much about but them I found this track, “Streatham”.
UK rap never sounded so good. Over a trap instrumental, the rapping was solid and meaningful.
I also listened to a couple of other tracks from the album namely “Black” and “Location” feat. Burna Boy.
I was torn between putting “Streatham” or “Black” here for track of the day but chose “Streatham” because it’s the first song I listened to from Dave.
