Sample Saturday: Willie the Kid – Goodness Gracious x Merge

Recently, AZ dropped his single “We Movin'”, produced by Statik Selektah, from his Do or Die II album.

While “We Movin'” contains the same sample as Willie the Kid’s “Goodness Gracious”, it’s Tha Audio Unit’s flip of the sample that I prefer over Statik Selektah’s too busy instrumental.

It’s beats like this that I really love. Soulful and cinematic and providing the perfect backdrop for the artist to drop jewels without any distractions.

The Sample:

Merge is an 80’s soul group that released one self-titled album in 1982.

On the album is a song called “What Makes You Wanna Lie To Me”. It is this track that is sampled in “Goodness Gracious” and also on AZ’s “We Movin'”.

The Audio Unit grabbed the intro for “Goodness Gracious” while Statik Selektah did a bit more chopping around.

Simple in this case trumps being technical and makes for a great listen.
